Decided to start a new thread for this one, as it seemed a little (EDIT: A LOT OF) overkill to include it in Dyn's original Concept sheet.
p.s. seriously, go get a drink and a sandwich or something
So right: Derilium.
The very short rundown is that its an element which renders the wearer impervious to explosions, or any quick blast of heat energy. And thats all you REALLY need to know, but here it is in more detail:
Naturally, it's ancient, rare, and only seems to have been fashioned into differing forms of body armour (unknown to how or why*), and so has never been seen as a raw element. This means that Derilium armour corresponds to parts of the human anatomy (Dyn's Mask and Boots = Head and Feet).
*because, obviously, how do you fashion something thats impervious to heat?
There's a bunch of regulations though, so its not a case of "I've just made my character invincible".
These include (but are not limited too):
o To be immune to explosions, the Derilium has to be attached to the corresponding part of the human body (so the mask only works if Dyn has it over his face, not on the side of his head)
o Wearing only parts of Derilium armour does not give an impenetrable defence against explosions. It has to facing the direction of the blast. The mask, for example, would largely protect Dyn from explosions from the front, but not the back or sides
That said, the mask protects almost his entire front, not just his face. And now im going to throw bogus science at you just to sound smart:
Derilium is constantly exothermic (feels cold to touch, takes IN energy), and this level of exothermicity varies depending on the surroundings: big explosion = very exothermic, sunny day = slightly exothermic. Due to this continous variation, Derilium needs a constant source of heat to function adequately (human host), and this is why Masks are perhaps the most common among artifacts (most heat is lost through the head).
Should derilium be away from any source of heat for a sufficient amount of time, it will 'dissociate' (deform on a molecular/atomic level into a non-functioning state) and will not render the wearer explosively immune. The element itself, however, still cant be damaged by thermal energy. To 'reactivate', the artifacts needs a 'host' person thing from which it can slowly reabsorb heat energy, until its active again (this takes quite a while).
Due to this dependance for a human host, Derilium associates itself to its wearer. Everyone's heat signature is unique, and so the Derilum alters its exothermicity to its host. THIS MEANS that piece of Derilium will only function correctly for that person, and certain heat signatures are more favorable for Derilium than others (eg Derilium associated with Dyn will be more effective than Derillium associated with someone with a less optimum heat signature. Of course, this means Derilium wont work on a zombie at all, as they have almost NO heat signature).
Ok, now when Derilium is associated to a host, it starts to pick up the hosts traits: the masks appear to convey emotion by recognising the different brain waves (/heat given off by them) and reacting to them. This also means that Derilium can morph on a very small scale to suit the wearer. Dyn's mask often shows his emotion at the time, and so often betrays his emotion if he's thinking something else to the way he's acting.
And I thinks that's all you need to know about THAT. Probably more so.
Anyway, yes, this relates to Dyn's goals and whatnot:
As I mentioned before, Dyn was raised by a professor who I've now decided to name Prof. Peter Salt (after saltpeter, the oxidising agent in gunpowder). Now, in his younger years, Prof. Salt was a keen and celebrated explorer (or so he likes to say) and so Dyn was brought up on tales of grandeur and exploration.
As you can guess, the Profs main fascination throughout his life was the search for Derilium, of which he was one among the party of explorers that discovered it. This addiction trickled down to Dyn.
Prof Salt soon discovered that Dyn had an amazing affinity for the element; being able to reactivate Derilium much faster and to a much more effective degree than anyone else. So much so, that the Derilium Mask that Prof Salt had given him downright refused to respond to anyone else, and yet seem to 'deactivate' much slower when away from Dyn (still portraying his emotions while away from his body).
Long story short (HA!), Dyn now also wants to go and explore the world for Derilium, and finding out just who created the Derilium armour in the first place. Ancient cities and Derilium exhibits in museums have led him to become an unashamed tomb raider and artifact thief, and hopefully throughout Z-Legion he'll aquire more and more Derilium artifacts to add to his attire (so he hopefully wont look as plain as he does now).
His array of bombs (created by Prof Salt) make for great excavation tools and homemade entrances and exits into museums (so i didnt just include them randomly). Also, due to Derilium being impervious to blasts, Dyn can blow a place to hell and back without any fear of damaging it.
RIGHT
I'm pretty sure I thought of a million other things, but I dont want to make this page 1 of 100.
I DO, however want a prize for the longest Z-Legion thread
